To celebrate Student Volunteering Week Ciara shares her story on why she wanted to volunteer for Aberlour and the benefits she has gained from volunteering.
Ciara’s Story
As a Psychology student with a keen interest in the domains of Forensic and Clinical Psychology, the opportunities Aberlour offered were the perfect fit for both utilizing my degree in a real life setting and for further developing skills and knowledge to enhance my learning.
The training for my role as part of the Aberlour Family Support Service in Glasgow was theory based and in depth which enabled me to be well prepared for any scenarios which may arise throughout my time working with those affected by domestic abuse. It was flexible around my studies and elicited applicative value to what I have learned at University. This opportunity has allowed me to play a role in supporting vulnerable members of society whilst developing academically and personally.
The staff at Aberlour are passionate and driven to making a difference in the lives of their service users which is a trait I aim to uphold. In addition to this, I have obtained invaluable experience and knowledge which will greatly assist in future study or employment and hope to continue in learning and developing in this role and others that may arise at Aberlour.
